The James Auer Memorial Award was one of 16 awards presented to visual artists showing in the Wisconsin Artists Biennial at the opening reception on Sunday June 5. The reception and awards presentation was well attended with over 350 esteemed artists, patrons, members and supporters of the visual art community present. The First Place James Auer Memorial $500 Award honoring the late Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Art Critic was awarded to Edwin Jager of Oshkosh for his work “Imploded Books”. James Auer was also a visual artist using photography as his chosen medium and a long-standing member of Wisconsin Painters and Sculptors. The Biennial, hosted by Wisconsin Painters & Sculptors Southeast Chapter / Wisconsin Artists in all Media and co-sponsored by The Anderson Arts Center in Kenosha, drew 500 entries from over 275 artists in all media, encompassing both 2-D and 3-D art, and was juried by Lynne Warren, Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. The other 15 Awards recipients are as follows: Second Place $400 Award to David Husom of Hager, Third Place $400 Award to Susan Gilgen of Madison, $200 Juror Merit Awards went to Drew Malcolm of Madison, George Ronsholdt of Milwaukee and Monte Wilson, also of Madison. Katherine Biehl, Milwaukee, won the Jerry Dell Memorial Award $200 for Photography, and Cara Tomlinson of Eau Claire and Nova Czarnecki of Milwaukee were awarded a Duo Exhibit at Alverno College. $100 Merit Awards were presented to Christine Style of Green Bay, Emily Barthel of Kenosha and Dr. Peter Mak of River Falls. The Grava Gallery $100 Framing Award went to Angela Young of Merrill while David V. Holmes of Racine and Holley Bakich of Milwaukee took home the Artists & Display $100 Merchandise Award, and the Utrecht Art Supply $50 Award went to James Matson, of Milwaukee.
