Invitation of the New Girl by Featured Artist Janet Roberts, Oil/collage, 48 x48
I am currently working on collages and still lives that draw upon memories and details from my past. In painting the still life, I choose objects that move me--sometimes consciously, and often emotionally and mysteriously. I enjoy placing items together, which feel right to me, but may confound the viewer. I suppose I am creating a small drama--setting a stage--that is static but has the possibility to become richer and deeper upon contemplation. I have recently begun introducing some of my own poetry into collages, and like the visual imagery of the handwritten words as well as the psychological direction they provide.

In the featured painting, INITIATION OF THE NEW GIRL, I am dealing with issues and fears I faced as a result of moving a great deal in my youth. The strange characters and mannequins with masks become a metaphor for all that was frightening and intimidating about those moves and the new schools I entered.

Receiving a degree in Fine Arts from Indiana University in 1966, I started showing and selling my paintings at art fairs in the Chicago suburbs. I lived for a brief time in London, England, where I had a painting juried into the Royal Academy of Art Summer Exhibition. My work is currently shown at the Lake Country Gallery, and the Bilhenry Walker Gallery.
