a great figurative sculptor

FR. Don Claude Noel Remembered

by Steve Ballard

Don Noel
Fr. Donald Claude Noel, sculptor and WVA member since the Northeast Chapter's inception in 1991, passed away on Friday, November 21 after fighting a battle with spinal cancer. Don will be remembered by many members as a great figurative sculptor who supported all of our work individually and collectively. He held positions of WVA Northeast Chapter Chair and, as Secretary he enjoyed taking meeting notes for many years. Don served as a priest at Saint Norbert Abbey, where on one occasion he invited the entire Northeast Chapter to have a meeting in his studio after dining in the cafeteria and chanting during vespers in the chapel. One of Don's greatest achievements as a sculptor was the authentic portrait he constructed after extensive research on the skull of St. Norbert of Xanten at Strahov Abbey, Prague.

Don was the kindest person many of us ever knew. He will be greatly missed by our family of artists.
