Artist Statement
My passion as an artist is creating collages. Many are personal narratives that draw together experiences, dreams, stories, and emotions. I approach each new piece as though it were a puzzle, combining selected materials and trusting that an image will emerge. I am often surprised when my work is finished.
I choose materials visually, but also for their meanings and the memories they hold. My recent work explores the translation of expressive and energetic qualities through color. Textures are created with paint, photo fragments, cloth, and other media, including beeswax.
My art also reflects my love of reading. Sometimes a poem or a phrase acts as a starting point for a collage; other times I add words and text cut from old books. I also write as part of my creative process, embedding words in the layers of mixed media pieces.
