To smell the earth and be surrounded by birdsong is a gift.

Featured Artist Kathie Wheeler

Attitude, 12”x 16”, Oil on canvas
Kathie counts herself most fortunate to be an artist. She is primarily an oil painter and paints plein air throughout the year, as well as working in the studio. While she was trained as a portrait artist at the American Academy of Art in Chicago, she spends as much time as she can painting outdoors. To smell the earth and be surrounded by birdsong is a gift to her. But, whether working outdoors, or indoors on a portrait or still life, the goal is the same - to capture the essence of what she is looking at. Before starting a painting she spends some time gazing at her subject matter to “feel” what it is that she wants to capture. It may be the lift of the chin of the model, or just the play of light across a road.

Kathie is a member of Oil Painters of America, Wisconsin Visual Artists and the Palette and Chisel in Chicago. She is represented by Fine Line Designs Gallery in Door County, where she will be a part of a group show in May, and by State Street Gallery in LaCrosse.

This summer, Kathie will have work displayed in both the juried Oil Painters of America (OPA) National show, May 18th – June 17th at the Insight Gallery in Fredricksburg TX, as well as the OPA Salon show June 21st - August 31st at Crooked Tree Art Center in Petoskey MI. She will also be participating in the Plein Air Easton 2013 festival in Easton, Maryland in July.

Kathie and her husband remain on the small farm where they raised their two children, and watch excitedly as they launch into lives of their own. Her paintings reflect the experience of her life in a way that only someone who has lived and worked the land there can. “I try to put the feeling or emotion I see in a place or person on the canvas. My hope is that the viewer can take some of that away with them.”
