“Through Mia’s Eyes”
Gallery & Frame Shop, 94 South Main St., Fond du Lac, WI.
Being a 12 year-old comes with challenges. But for one Sun Prairie girl, those challenges were compounded by deteriorating eyesight. In July 2011, Mia Zutter was diagnosed with Stargardt’s disease, a condition which left her legally blind in a matter of weeks.
WVA artist Mel Kolstad is Mia’s aunt. “When we realized the scope of this disease, we felt powerless”, says Mel. “After the initial shock wore off, I asked myself what I could do to help.”
Kolstad rallied 12 artist friends to create works of art for an exhibit to benefit Foundation Fighting Blindness (www.blindness.org). By making works just one quarter-inch square, viewers can get an idea of Mia’s challenges. “That tiny square – which I had to squint to even see – brings awareness of the difficulties Mia has in seeing things that we take for granted.” 100% of the art sales are being donated to Foundation Fighting Blindness.
Mia participates in ice skating, track & field, and cross country at Cardinal Heights in Sun Prairie, with the help of her older sister Natalie. In Mia’s words, “I try and stay positive. I’m not going to let it (the Stargardt’s) get in the way of me doing something.”
