Outreach to emerging artists, educators, and members of the local community

Internship for Southeast Chapter

by Elise Feree Kuhlow

My name is Elise Feree Kuhlow and I am a Junior at Mount Mary University, working to complete a BA in Graphic Design and an art minor. My main focus is digital media but I also have a strong passion in sculpture especially working with metals. My artwork has been selected and displayed by Mount Marys Honor show at the Harley Davison and earned the Hamilton and Layton Art Scholarship Award.
This past semester I had the unique opportunity to intern with the Wisconsin Visual Artists Southeast Chapter. This internship allowed me to engage with active WVA SE members, attend gallery openings, and WVA SE meetings. This gave me first-hand knowledge of the various activities around the Milwaukee area, which I was then able to broadcast through social media in order to inform other artists of WVAs activities.
My main project was to create a promotional coaster, which was used in outreach to emerging artists, educators, and members of the local community who were interested in joining WVA. So far through my experience I was able to engage two other prospective members at MMU that are interested in becoming active with the group. Also to conclude my internship I will be reaching out to area educators to inquire about the chapter.
This past semester I also was an Intern for the Marian Gallery at MMU, and doing both of these internships gave me a more comprehensive understanding of how artists engage in the gallery system. This has been such an inspirational and eye-opening experience, and I am very grateful I had this opportunity through WVA. I truly feel that I have grown not only as an artist, but also as an individual.
