"Building in Down-Time" watercolor, 2018.
The piece I've chosen for Wisconsin Visual Artists website is
"Private Moment Gone Public" It was part of a large watercolor show called, "People, Going About Their Lives"
In recent work, a story begins on large, free form, torn sheets of a watercolor paper roll. Painting generally is my starting point, but not with the piece you see. The fly away qualities of paper that's been on a roll suggested the subject matter within this private, unguarded moment. Paint followed in order to elaborate.
My own story. I grew up in Washington, DC in the forties during and after the War (WWII) - a time when mothers were home without a car, children wandered the neighborhood, dogs were off leash, and empty lots were being excavated for new homes and businesses. I had unlimited free time to people watch and make up stories about what they were doing and why they were doing it. What interested me then and now were/are the ways human beings allocate time and energy during the course of their lives."
