She gathers her supplies from a variety of sources, plates and dishes, glass tile of various types, porcelain tile and stained glass. She will also use jewelry, stones, marbles and other found objects in her work. "I like the surprises to the eye of different textures, shapes and colors coming together to create a whole that can be enjoyed in tiny details."
Photos don't really capture the true nature of her art, as the lighting on a piece will give it new variations. "I want to create two (or more) pictures in one: The way the light reflects off the tile at night, daylight vs. electric light, create new ways to see the same image. I often use irridescent tile which will actually change colors from red to blue for example, depending on the angle. "
Mosaics are an ancient art form, used throughout the centuries by countless cultures. Meredith brings her own modern take to her mosaics. "The tactile surfaces, asking to be felt as well as seen provide a sculptural dimension which I love. They have a permanence and solidity that connects them through time to the ancient."
Meredith's work draws on personalities and mood, the juxtaposition of softness and sparkle. She began making mosaics in 2013 and has already won several awards and continues to work to improve her technique and skill. She is a member of Driftless Area Artists group Monroe Arts Center Monroe WI. She welcomes the oportunities to meet and learn from other local artists.
